Treasurer
We are looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board. This is a rewarding opportunity to use your financial expertise to support a well-established charity with a friendly, collaborative culture.
We welcome and encourage applicants from all backgrounds. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience of charity financial management, or with a professional qualification in accountancy or bookkeeping. You will be able to interpret financial information, provide constructive challenge, and work collaboratively with a diverse team of trustees and staff. Above all, you will help ensure trustees have the financial information they need to make informed decisions, so the charity can deliver its mission.
The tasks for this role are:
- Understand and fulfil the legal requirements for charity financial governance
- Provide strategic oversight of the charity’s financial affairs, supporting the executive team in preparing the annual budget and advising the Board on funding needs for the year ahead
- Work with the Finance Manager to ensure proper financial records are kept and that procedures are in place to safeguard the charity’s resources (Venture Scotland uses Xero accounting software and an external provider for payroll)
- Work with the fundraising team to ensure the Fundraising Code of Practice is embedded, grant procedures are robust, and donor stewardship is considerate
- Chair the Finance and Fundraising Sub-Committee, which meets four times a year (terms of reference available on request)
- Present a Treasurer’s report at Board meetings, using information supplied by the Finance Manager (six Board meetings are held each year)
- Submit a financial review for the Annual Report, liaise with the Accountant and Independent Examiner on the annual accounts review, and sign the approved accounts on behalf of the Board of Trustees
- Work with the team to maintain the finance and funding risk register
Please note that this role is a voluntary position with no remuneration. The time commitment is estimated to be about 10 hours a month; some months may be more depending on the meeting schedule. The expectation is that the treasurer will serve for 3 years and may offer to serve a second term. Our current Treasurer will resign at the AGM in December 2026 after completing 2 terms of service in the role.
